what are the nursing responsibilities and side effects of tramadol?

Tramadol is a nonopoid centrally acting analgesic. The most common side effects resemble the moderate to strong opioid analgesics, including sedation, dizziness (hypotension), headache, dry mouth, constipation and urinary retention. Respiratory depression is minimal.
Nursing responsibilites include collecting baseline data--assess distress before control; determine the location, time of onset, and part of pain; assess anguish for psychological factors that can lower distress threshold such as anxiety, depression, fear and anger; assess hepatic and renal function. Dose intervals should be prolonged beside hepatic and renal dysfunction; take vitals; most importantly, listen to the patients, be aware of their claims.
